The Brief
HY is an exciting pop up venue which provides a showcase for some of the area’s most talented creative businesses, has opened in Stonehaven. The concept was to preserve the ground floor space as a high street outlet, give fledgling businesses a cost effective retail space, and also to give something back to the community of Stonehaven. The new space has proved popular with both residents and visitors as well as small creative businesses who have the opportunity to test and sell their products and services on the high street.

Internal refurbishment to for new pop-up shop facility.
The Design
Businesses can rent space for a week or a month, sharing the shop with up three others to create an
ever-changing, high-quality retail experience. Aimed at all types of creative businesses, early
bookings ranged from photographers and artists to hand-crafted furniture makers, clothing
accessories and home furnishings.
The refurbished space is itself a showcase to some of the area’s finest traditional trades and
materials. The interior walls have been stripped back to reveal the original timber linings, and the
remaining walls and ceilings have been plastered using natural clay plaster, a recyclable, reusable
and compostable material which is breathable and humidity and temperature regulating. It gives a
beautiful natural look to the space. Floors are concrete look ceramic tiles which are easy to keep
clean and great at disguising the odd muddy footprint! Lights have been chosen to compliment the
contemporary, industrial aesthetic. Shelving and bakery racking is re-purposed from the old bakery
which now lies derelict at the rear of the property. A new display table has been made by re-using
the old commercial bakery fridge door as a tabletop and creating a new timber base.
