Coastguard Cottage, Catterline

The Project

This cottage is located in a stunning cliff top location in the village of Catterline, 6 miles south of Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire. Catterline is a delightful old fishing village, a Conservation Area, with rows of old fishermen’s and coastguard cottages perched above the wide sweep of a picturesque rocky bay, with a little harbour below.

The original house was full of character, enjoying superb views towards the sea and the surrounding countryside. The brief was to alter and refurbish the layout of the cottage to create a more use-able kitchen/dining area and an improved master bedroom suite upstairs, while retaining the character of the cottage.

The interior layout of the cottage to the rear was altered to form an open plan kitchen/dining room with a small utility room and toilet to one end. The original internal stone walls were re-pointed and lighting arranged to highlight the character of the stone. Folding/sliding doors were installed on the rear elevation to make the most of the small rear garden. Upstairs the master bedroom was subdivided with pocket doors to form a luxurious en-suite bathroom with a central free-standing bath.
